We will meet at the regular Wednesday morning Women’s Legislative Roundtable Session at:

AAUW Hosts Rising Stars Event for Local Middle School Girls

On Sunday, November 20th, over 25 local middle school girls and their families attended the Rising Stars event hosted by AAUW at McCormick Observatory. Local girls were nominated by their schools for showing leadership in the areas of science and mathematics. Dr. Kelsey Johnson, an astronomer at UVa, was the keynote speaker. She described her job as the best job in the world! AAUW Charlottesville UVa looks forward to hosting this event annually and seeing more girls and women become interested in STEM careers.

The AAUW Charlottesville UVA team participated in the National Eating Disorders Association Fundraiser walk on Saturday November 5th. It was a gorgeous day to walk for a good cause. Over 90 people walked, raising more than $3,000 for the National Eating Disorders Association! Thank you to all who participated.

We had a great turn out for our October meeting on Women, the Media, and Body Image. Thanks to the speakers, Amy Chestnutt for emceeing the event, and everyone who attended and helped to make this a successful event. For those of you who could not make it, a brief summary is below.

Dr. Press introduced the term "to-be-looked-at-ness". With a clip from the movie Vertigo, she illustrated that in movies men do a lot of "looking", whereas the focus is on the effect of the woman-- what she's wearing, what her face looks like, what her body looks like, etc. She says the people making films are unaware of the daily experience of the majority of young women in our culture.

Dr. Gray presented an overview of the history of eating disorders and disordered eating. She describes the relationship between women and food as being similar to the Facebook status "it's complicated," suggesting benefits, but also some degree of unhealthiness. She discussed the importance of seeking specialists and seeking treatment early.

Ms. Brede discussed the "health at every size" paradigm. Here, the focus is on health, not appearance. She explains that dieting is actually harmful and risky to health. Healthy weight is individualized and should not be set by a standardized table. The best part is, health at every size has been empirically tested, and it works!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The state of Virginia was awarded a Public Policy grant for 2011-12 of $1000.00 from our national office. This is a grant to improve the number of women as registered voters.

Each district was asked to recruit a minimum of 3 volunteers to work on this project. Volunteering involves the following:

1. There are monthly conference calls with all 15 states that were awarded grants.

2. There will be a 6-hour training which some states are tying to the statewide events/meetings this fall. Ours will be in April in Newport News - Friday April 20th. While we don't have an agenda with details yet we know the time frame. They will be hiring part-time field coordinators for each state. They will be based out of their homes and work on administrative and organizational duties to help us with voter registration drives. The grant is based on using the Woman-to-Woman voter turnout guide.

3. What we need are AAUW members that are interested and available in setting up a community campaign to register more voters. The training will be in late April so that means getting as organized as possible before that and being ready to move quickly next spring.

Campus Action Projects enable teams of student leaders and campus faculty to design and implement effective programs that enhance campus offerings, promote leadership, and improve academic and career outcomes.

Teams can apply for up to $5,000 to carry out their proposed project during the spring semester. AAUW disburses $50,000 total.

The topic is Crossing the Line: Addressing Sexual Harassment in Schools in conjuncture with the upcoming November 2011 research report on sexual harassment in middle and high school.

This year celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts. Over 50 million girls and women are alumnae. In fact, the majority of the women at the AAUW district meeting had been involved in Girl Scouts at some point in their lives. The missions of the Girl Scouts and of AAUW align closely, and girls are living in a better place because of both of these organizations.

Jean Ann Hughes hopes for continued collaboration, as there is still a lot to do to better the lives of women and girls today. So, she asks, "what did you do today"... and "what are we going to do tomorrow?"

September 30 at 6:30 pm in the Darden Auditorium.

The event will feature a screening of the documentary Miss Representation, which includes provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics like Condoleezza Rice, Lisa Ling, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, and Gloria Steinem. Miss Representation presents startling facts and statistics that leave audiences shaken and armed with a new perspective. Miss Representation premiered in the documentary competition at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and has won awards at the 2011 Sonoma Film Festival and the 2011 Maui Film Festival.

The documentary will be followed by a panel discussion, comprised of a group of women who embody many of the ideals our Campaign promotes and who, through the constructive application of their minds and talents, have met success. The panel will include Sharon Hostler, the McLemore Birdsong Professor of Pediatrics and Senior Associate Dean at the School of Medicine; the Honorable Eva Scott, Virginia's first woman senator; Andrea Press, UVA Professor of Professor of Media Studies and Sociology; and Kate Bruno, nutritionist and eating disorders educator. Andrea Copeland, founder of Positive Channels, will moderate the discussion (see below for full bios).

Although unrated, the film, Miss Representation, may be considered a PG-13 film. While there are some strong images, the content is largely educational and can be useful for parent-child discussions on how one can interpret and respond to what one sees and hears in the media.

AAUW of Virginia Seeks Nominations

In April, AAUW of Virginia members will vote for officers of the State Board. The positions available are President, Vice President Programs, Vice President Communications, and Vice President Public Policy.

The positions will be voted on after the annual meeting (as stated in the summer 2011 Virginia Vision) to allow board members to take their positions on July 1, 2012. The position will be held from July 1, 2012 until June 30, 2014.

The President must have previously served on the State Board and represents AAUW of Virginia in all matters, runs all state board and general meetings, visits the branches and is generally responsible for insuring that all branches and the state conform to all national and state bylaws.

The Vice President for Programs prepares for all state programming and assists all branch programming vice presidents in advancing AAUW’s mission through thoughtful and educational activities. The Vice President for Programs also serves as President in the absence of the President from her duties.

The Vice President for Public Policy is responsible for public policy issues to meet state and federal needs, in accordance with AAUW guidelines.

The Vice President for Communications is responsible for the Communications Committee, which includes the public information officer, the technology chair, and those responsible for publication of the newsletter.

All positions may be held as a “co” position with two people. For the past term, our Public Policy vice presidency was held by two people who split the responsibilities to great effect. Co holders of a position are in fact sharing one position and have one vote at board meetings. It is a viable option for people that want to serve but are afraid of the responsibility. Many hands make light work.

Board members must attend three meetings a year (summer, fall, and winter conference call) as well as a meeting the afternoon before the state convention or meeting starts. Board members are partially reimbursed for hotel fees and are given a mileage reimbursement. Meals at board meetings are paid for.

Please note that a previous email from me indicated that District Representative nominations were to be made as well. However, the vote for the district representatives is to be made by the districts themselves. The term of office is also from July 1, 2012 until June 30, 2014. VOTE YES TO SAVE MONEY!

The board of AAUW of Virginia, after reducing operating costs repeatedly in the last few years, and after recently examining our state budget thoroughly, has determined that we are unable to operate effectively with our current revenues. We had to dip into our reserves to balance this year’s budget. An increase in our twenty-year-old, eight-dollar dues is a probability. (Read details about the dues increase in the fall issue of the Vision, due out in October.)

However, there is one more way to try and cut expenses, and that is to cut the largest line item in the budget: the printing and mailing costs of the state newsletter, the Virginia Vision. We want to begin emailing the Vision to as many members as possible in June of 2012. That will reduce the number of printed newsletters that we mail, thus cutting our expenses, hopefully by thousands of dollars. (Yes, we definitely will continue to mail the Vision to members unable or unwilling to receive it by email.)

This idea is not new; branches figured it out long ago. Branches have been emailing their newsletters for years, thus reducing their operating costs. We’ve all learned that using technology to our advantage saves money! Depending on how many branch members are willing to receive the Vision via email, the amount we will need to increase state dues will be minimized.

We hope that YOU will be willing to receive the Vision online. We need to hear from you about that, so in late October or early November, members with a current email address will be polled via email asking if you are willing to receive the Vision online. Your choice of response will make a huge difference in the AAUW of Virginia budget and in the amount of dues increase. If at all possible, please say YES!

What's AAUW up to at the national and state level? What are YOU a part of by being a member of AAUW: -- Check it out:

1. AAUW was named a top-rated nonprofit in two categories (women's empowerment organization and education organization) by Great Nonprofits, which reviews and rates charitable organizations.
2. AAUW was given $23,500 by the law firm representing 5,600 women sales employees who won a class action suit against Novartis for discrimination in pay, pregnancy, and promotion. This type of award (cy pres) is used to promote the interests of the class members, and it will support AAUW programs and advocacy, especially our pay equity work. Tangible recognition of AAUW's work and importance in this area--and a very pleasing surprise.
3. Members in Virginia heeded the call to email or call our Virginia Senate members and ask them to support passage of ERA--and they did! For the first time in the history of the ERA (37 years), ERA made it out of committee--and then was passed! Now it has to go to the House of Delegates. Keep up the pressure!
4. AAUW members joined other women's groups in intense lobbying of House of Representative members to remove a re-definition of rape from pending legislation. The bill used the wording "forcible rape," which would eliminate rape in cases of incest, underage girls, unconsciousness, or date rape. AAUW and others strongly objected since all rape is committed by force, and it only took a few days of phone calls and emails to result in pulling the language. Contacting our legislators works!

Who wants to go to the AAUW of Virginia spring meeting?!?!?! (April 8-9)

It is going to be a great meeting withl ots of good information from our speakers and workshop presenters--and it's going to be fun! Friday night is a Country Fair (wear your college sweatshirts or t-shirts if you have them). Enjoy special tours on Saturday aftenoon before the evening buffet (mansions, historic homes, tea, wine tasting, etc.) Wear your casual clothes for the weekend and stay a while to enjoy this beautiful area of Virginia. For icing on the cake, your state board is giving each branch with attendees who aren't state board members $100 to defray expenses, and it is already a very inexpensive meeting. Registration of $50 includes meals, and the hotels range from $50 to $80 and include breakfast. We have also invited members from the Kingsport, TN branch and six branches in North Carolina that are close to Wytheville, so we hope to get to know some non-Virginia members too. It's also possible to just go for the day.

I just wanted to thank you for attending the AAUW talk last night on perfectionism! I think that we all can agree that perfectionism is an important topic- particularly for women and girls in our community.

We were honored to have Alexis Andres share her research with us. Alexis's work was insightful and certainly added to the on-going conversation about the pressures many girls and women are experiencing today.

Description of the talk:

An online search for "effortless perfection" returns topics ranging from Gossip Girl, to fashionistas, to corporate management, but how is the real-life search for effortless perfection affecting collegiate women today? This talk will explore women's identity development around the concepts of perfectionism, effortless perfectionism, and perfectionistic self-presentation. Examples of how cultural and gender norms are shaped and manifested will be discuseed.

Getting Out the Vote by Loren Intolubbe Chmil

August 26, 2010 marked the 90th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment---the result of a hard-won battle to secure voting rights for women. It is a valuable exercise to pause and look back in history (the film Ironjawed Angels is one very accessible and compelling source for this) to acknowledge just what it took to achieve that legislative goal. By reminding ourselves of that seminal time in the history of our democracy, we are better able to comprehend the importance of informed voter participation. As a member of the League of Women Voters (LWV) for the past 15 years, I have learned a great deal about the challenges of nonpartisan voter education---in a time when zealousness and partisanship are the preferred methods for influencing election outcomes and legislative agendas, LWV and AAUW are two of the major civic organizations that work to establish and sustain participation and action committed to the greater public good. Sadly, our increasingly negative political climate is once again disenfranchising and disillusioning thousands of voters who find themselves unable to identify where their interests are being represented and how their vote could possibly count. As this midterm election approaches, it seems especially important that each of us engage in:

1) Gathering Evidence---spend some time locating multiple and reliable sources of information on the candidates and the issues, and SHARE---informed voters seek out evidence beyond their own ideologies and preferences in order to support the common good;

2) Demonstrating a willingness in civil and civic discourse with those around you---reclaim our public spaces as those where citizens are willing to ‘grapple in the gray’ and attempt to understand the complexity and rewards of truly democratic decision-making;

3) Getting Out the Vote---do what you can to increase the likelihood that everyone around you can and will get there, and get there informed. If possible, take some time off on November 2 so that you are well able to get to the polls, organize rides to the polls, and celebrate the comparatively seamless election day experience we all enjoy (or at least should) in this country---I was 47 years old before I ever had to wait in a significant line to vote and I was thrilled to be able to have that experience.

My personal goal for this midterm election is to do what I can to defy the predictions and the expectations of those who underestimate the power of the voter. True democracy depends upon the informed participation of an active citizenry, grounded in the legacy of the suffragists who fought so hard for our right, especially as members of organizations such as LWV and AAUW, to cast a vote. Let’s make an even greater commitment this midterm election to inform, participate, and engage---and to continue to cultivate and sustain habits of participation and action beyond campaigning and election cycles.

HOW TO GET AN AAUW MEMBERSHIP CARD

Remember when the phrase “I’m a card-carrying member of…” had literal truth to it? Membership in an organization meant that you received a wallet-sized membership card, with your membership number on it, when you paid your dues. Years ago AAUW stopped mailing membership cards, probably due to money constraints. Currently you need your membership number to enter the AAUW Member Center on the website. Your membership number is on the Outlook, but who keeps that handy?? Today you can have a membership card in your wallet within a matter of minutes. Having your card and membership number handy, will make it quick and easy to login to the website whenever you wish.

Here’s how to print your own AAUW Membership Card:

1. Sit down at your computer and go to www.aauw.org

2. Click on Log In at the top right corner.

3. At this point if you don’t know your Member ID number, click on Member ID Lookup and enter name, state and zip code; submit, then scroll down until you see your Member ID. It’s FAST!

4. On that same page near the top, in teal, you will see the words I AM. Click on that. The box will turn white. Click on Member Services Database.

5. If you have never registered here, you must register. It is just a way to verify you membership again and create a password. Click on register here and follow the steps. Minimize the page so it is ready to continue when you receive an email which says you are registered with a password. It doesn’t take long.

6. When you have your password registered, maximize your page, enter your password and login.

(If that doesn’t work, just follow steps 1-4 again…4 clicks…enter your password and login. There is also a help number to use if necessary: 1-800-326-2289.)

7. Now, at the top left you can click on My Profile/Membership Card and then print out your card. Maybe print two cards: one for your wallet and one for your desk!

AAUW's Charlottesville branch participated in the 2nd annual walk to benefit the National Eating Disorders Association. The walk raised almost $5,000 for the national NEDA chapter!

1. October 23rd for the Northwest District Meeting. Please come. It's not a district meeting if everyone there is from Harrisonburg. Your support is needed! More information about this meeting in in your branch newsletter. Hope to see you there!

2. Mark April 8-10, 2011 as the date for the Spring Conference in Wytheville. As our state president, Caroline Pickens, said "For years our members in the southwest part of Virginia have trekked to state meetings in Northern Virginia, Richmond area, and the Tidewater where most of us live. Now it's time to "just say yes" to supporting our members "down there" and come see a part of Virginia we may have only glimpsed as we sped along I-81." The meeting is instead of the leadership conference and is intended for all members. It will be all day Saturday, includes fun events on Friday evening for those who will be there the day before. The committee for the meeting has negotiated some great hotel deals to make it affordable and because the 2010 state convention committee was so successful in garnering contributions for that meeting, we have a surplus. The state board voted to use the surplus to provide a stipend to every branch that comes to Wytheville of $75 (a bit more if possible) to help defray the costs for your branch to send members.

This September 12th, the National Eating Disorders Association will be hosting their 2nd annual awareness raising walk. The event will be held at the UVA Park Pavillion and will include the following:

* The 5K walk through the North Grounds of the University of Virginia.
* The "heart-felt half-mile" for the final half-mile of the walk in honor of all those who are struggling with eating disorders.
* Information booths from area vendors, clinicians and healthy living professionals across the state.
* Inspirational stories from eating disorder survivors.
* Lunch for all the walk participants.
* A raffle with great prizes from local businesses.
* A day to be educated, inspired and empowered!
* We are honored that Kathleen MacDonald of the F.R.E.E.D. Foundation will be joining us to share a story of hope and recovery for all!

Pre-Registration is $20 for adults and day-of registration is $25- kids are $10 no matter when they register.

A Powerful Noise

The Charlottesville branch of AAUW got together for its first social gathering on June 1st. We watched the film A Powerful Noise, the story of 3 women in 3 different countries working to overcome gender barriers to claim voice in their societies. After viewing the film, we engaged in a fascinating discussion led by Dr. Jen Merritt, Director of Diversity and Advocacy at the University of Virginia's Women's Center. Our discussion focused on the effects of poverty on each of the three women's lives. Each woman was able to overcome poverty and the stigma attached to it to find her voice and lead a movement in her community. After discussing the strength of organizations led by women, the AAUW chapter is excited to begin making their own powerful noise in Charlottesville!

1st meet-up

On Wednesday, April 21st, the AAUW of Charlottesville UVA held its first meet-up at Orzo on Main Street in Charlottesville. Many of the charter members were able to attend and we learned a little bit about the organization and one another. We also had an opportunity to brainstorm a little bit about ideas for projects and programs that fit needs in the local community. Many exciting ideas were generated that we will discuss at our next meet-up.

This summer (our first summer as an official branch), we will be focusing on getting to know one another, bringing in new members and educating our membership so that we can start projects and programs in the fall as a well connected and informed community.

We will be hosting our first event on June 1st at 7pm. We will be screening the film, "A Powerful Noise" which will be followed by a conversation about the themes in the film. We hope that lots of members will be able to join us.
